Joel’s mom died when he was five from a drug overdose. He was adopted when he was seven. He hated himself and despised his life. He told everyone that he would die before he was 20. God reversed that evil thought and changed his life. There were dark times for him but through prayer and standing on God’s promises, the victory was won.
God gave me the privilege of parenting. I was to stand in the gap for Joel, for his healing, discipline, life changes and new behavior. My job was to read and study the Bible, to listen to God’s guidance and instruction, to believe His word and to obey whatever He told me to do.
I had to follow His directions about prayer and to earnestly seek answers through intercession, praise, fasting and by waiting patiently for His leading, wisdom and help for all of Joel’s challenges.
There were times of great struggle and periods of great discouragement, yet the Lord told me to trust Him and believe in Him with all of my heart. God confirmed to me that He was in control of all of this mess. Just as a smelly onion is peeled of its outer layers, God would peel all the layers of wrong behavior and deceptive thinking off of Joel’s life.
The change that took place in Joel’s life was totally up to God. I had to lay the whole mess at the feet of Jesus and to trust Him to bring healing, deliverance, victory and eventually success. It was not up to me to orchestrate any changes. My job was to pray, seek answers in God’s Word and to daily listen to Him and obey with all my heart
When I have negative thoughts, Lord, fill my mind with things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. Lead me to find these virtues in Your Word. (Philippians 4:8)
Promise: “He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.“ 1 Peter 3:10
Partnering with God: Do I know children who hate their lives? Do I know someone who is ready to give up and despises his or her existence? God can change this overwhelming discouragement from sorrow into joy. Pray, believe and stand on promises in the Bible. Do not give up. Trust Jesus for His victory.
